Chinese herbal medicine stretches back thousands of years and is rooted in the Chinese Materia Medica, called Shen Nong Ben Cao.  Since that time, Chinese medicine has continued to develop its vast catalogue of over 10,000 medicinals, as well refine the art of combining them into herbal formulas.  Herbal medicine excels at dealing with internal conditions, particularly adjusting organ function and affecting their systemic manifestations. It is especially effective in the treatment of endocrine, dermatological, gynecological, and digestive conditions, among many others. It can also be used topically with great effect to ease pain and increase healing of wounds and bruising.

Herbal knowledge has also become a part of mainstream Chinese culture, particularly in the South, where it is used in soups and dishes, and is often given credit for the sustained longevity and good health in places like Hong Kong, which boasts one of the longest average lifespans in the world.
